How to hand-roll an Indian beedi, by Vaman the roadside kiosk beediman (dukan wala) |

More about my remote village backpacking across India on http://www.myindiaexperience.com

And here's how it went: went to Oros, the government office headquarters for registering my passport visa as a long term tourist (over 180 days stay requires this bureaucratic visit).

Taking a bus from the town I stayed at, I got down at a small junction from where I had to take a sort autorickshaw ride.

Resting from the government bus bumpy ride and rigid benches, I felt like sitting for a while. Vaman kiosk stood right there. A box, in the Indian typical roadside little Dukhan (Hindi for shop). I asked for a bidi, the locally leaf rolled tobacco cigarettes. He gave me one and refused to take any pay for it. While enjoying it I noticed Mr. Vaman preparing another, I took this rare chance to create this tutorial.

Later he gifted me this filmed bidi. I gave him a coin, a red USA cent. Foreign Coins are rare in rural areas as banks don't handle them as they do with notes.

I went on my merry way while Vaman jumped over the counter, closed the shop and went back to his home for his noon rest.

Short clips from rural Indian villages an towns of India. Backpacking and documening by video shooting and capture in photos. Sometimes use my projector I carry in my backpack to screen these movies to local, Desi villagers. I may create a full feature film later for American and NRI in the USA. India is amazing and incredible especially off the beaten track where traditional culture, community and nature make it a real eco-tourism experience. During the past 2 years in California and Arizona I had shared presentation talks and workshops to encourage this type of traveling and tourism.

Curently I use a Cisco Flip camera and a Canon G11. My Epson projector is a donation from Atul Thakkar. I also thank Mayur Shah for his help with video filming and editing.
