Have you ever stopped to think about the similarities between Revenge of the Sith and the Empire Strikes Back? Granted, those are the two darkest movies of the Star Wars Trilogy, but the similarities run a lot deeper.

In this video, two scenes are compared. One is the scene where Anakin Skywalker is named Darth Vader and becomes Darth Sidious's Apprentice. The other is the famous scene in which Darth Vader reveals that he is Luke Skywalker's father and offers him a apprenticeship. Already, some similarities are apparent.

Notes: If you're wondering why I didn't do the Mace Vs Palpatine duel and Luke vs Vader duel, the DVD files I were using for the ESB duel were corrupted halfway through. If you are curious, click on the video posted under this vid.

For my friends: The collection vid will be posted in the coming weeks, this seemed like a better 40th video.

  • The ROTS clips are almost mute compare to the ESB ones.

  • Blame it on the audio mixes for the two movies being completely different. Well, that and the fact I couldn't raise the volume of the ROTS clips because I didn't want the ROTS background music to conflict with the ESB music I had placed there.

  • I'm sure SW nerds out there have mentioned it before now, but how come their light sabres bounce off the metal railing instead of vaporising/melting it?

  • @zergling6000 anakin eventually did end the sith by killing the emporer

  • "I pledge myself to your teachings.."

Anakin never pledges himself to Palpatine.

Plus, if you but the whole"rule of two" thing, it was well past time for Vader to train an apprentice and off Palps.

  • i think there was a point to the similarities, in that luke was shown to be the true chosen one, who brings balance to the force, by succeeding in the challenges put before those with enough ability and virtue to become the chosen one, where anakin had failed.

on another somewhat related thought: the newer trilogy was perhaps constructed to display a tragic hero who follows the same story but unfortunately succumbs to the dark side

  • 3 lines up with 6 more

just as 2 lines up with 5

and 1 lines up with 4

  • I hate to say it, but I feel this video does a very good job at demonstrating how weak the dialogue is in the newer movies compared to the classic movies.

  • I noticed something interesting after watching Revenge of the Sith. This dialogue here: "Luke, you can destroy the Emperor, he has forseen it. Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son." When I first saw Empire Strikes Back, I thought Vader was just lying in an attempt to get Luke to join the dark side...but now, after seeing "Revenge of the Sith," I'm thinking that Vader may have actually been telling the truth--he saw Luke as a chance for him to escape Palpatine's control.

  • ROTS, IMO, parallels ROTJ more. Both Luke and Anakin wear black, they have become very powerful, they are both are over confident as well, they both face the Emperor and have to make a choice. I agree that the way both LUke and Padme refuse to join him in deposing the Emperor form a very strong parallel as well.

  • I was thinking more along the lines of Anakin's offer to Padme, and again his offer to Luke(after fully becoming Vader).

Anakin: I am more powerful than the Emperor, I can overthrow him, and we can rule the empire together.

Vader: We can overthrow the Emperor, and rule the galaxy as father and son.

  • me personally I think that rotj and rots has more of a parallel than esb but I see where your coming from.
