"Mridanga Highlights" is a new series that will feature random tidbits and instructions related to mridanga. It will encompass all different skill levels and is NOT intended to be followed in a progression.

If you want to learn mridanga from the beginning, please check out my "Mridanga Lessons" series.

Highlights 1: Learn to play the sliding "ghe" sound on the large side of the drum (also known as the "laghu vani" ghe). This style is used for complex rhythms and bhajans.

  • HK prabhu, i wish to know, how do i make this sort of 'crawly' sound while playing the sliding ghe? I can play everything else, this so called crawly sound, it lowers in pitch as the player plays it. In this video the player plays it at exactly 1:00-1:02. Iv heard players play it longer, can you please please put out a video teaching it? Iv seen players play it for much longer periods of time, up to 10+ seconds.

  • @Supernova12034 Which video are you talking about?

  • Where can I buy one like that drum?

  • @ravijdel That one was custom made in Mayapur.

  • Prabhu, how do you make it so resonant? Does it become like that over time or is it made like that? Or can you do something to the Mridanga to make it more resonant?

  • @ravijdel This drum happens to be of excellent quality; that is why it is so resonant.
