Because he was a talented musician who pretty much started the whole video, or memorable ones on MTV and it has nothing to do with him being black. you might check out U2's song "Pride In the Name of Love" as well, that's pretty much written about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in addition to dropping a line in about Jesus and Judas- and Bono wrote that in 1983-1984.

Now I feel my age. Angel of Harlem was about Billie Holiday for Pete's Sake. She sang. MJ sang.
