At the University of Washington is facing massive budget cuts which
means tuition hikes, cuts to financial aid, and overcrowded classrooms
for students.
It means layoffs, overwork, dangerous working conditions, furloughs,
health care cuts, and union busting for workers.
On March 4th we will fight back to defend our education and our jobs!
Students and workers across the country and around the world will be
striking on that day, responding to a call emerging from the mass
movement against budget cuts in California. Activists in some
California cities are even organizing to build for city-wide strikes
and actions on the 4th!
Here at UW we have tried rallying several times and it hasn't been
enough to stop the cuts. It's time we up the ante by showing the
legislators in Olympia that there will be no more business as usual on
our campus as long as they try to balance the budget at our expense!
ok, I'll admit I'll never participate in a protest (not my style lol) but I've got to support the students on this one. Though UW isn't the only place that has this problem, UM-Ann Arbor, Michigan State, and so many other public institutions have this issue. Hopefully, we can get something worked out in the next few years and hope this was just a blip on the radar, but I could see it getting worse. Hopefully UW and the other schools can get their stuff straight and not have to worry abut budgets

I know what the problem is, I'm a libertarian and they're giving off socialist vibes. They're preaching against my beliefs. I'm glad I thought that out because under the current system they do have a valid point.

I was in Archeology when this went down. Hard to concentrate with that amplified woman's voice. And the chanting...
I don't like this protest and I'm trying to figure out why. I guess I see education as any other service. If you don't like it, take your business elsewhere. But since the school is public, that doesn't exactly hold water. We are all owners of it to some extent and thusly claim some right to how it's run. So I'm back to not knowing why I don't like the strike.

From a geophysics graduate student: We appreciate the solidarity. I am a first generation college student. My dad is a heavy equipment operator, I am a working class kid. My graduate stipend is meager enough that if I get a flat tire on my car, I have to save up for months to replace it. I wish people would talk about that instead. Not corporations.
