MATTHEWS: Explain to me the crowd outside that were clearly chanting
for his conviction.

BASHIR: Well, you probably don`t know this, Chris, because you spend
your time analyzing politics, history and other perhaps more erudite
subjects. I spent about a year with Michael Jackson and made a
documentary. And in the process, I got to see close-up his status to
people.

He wasn`t just a composer, a brilliant singer and incredible dancer.
And by the way, there`s no one else who`s combined all three of those
talents in one body like he did. He wasn`t just that to these fans, he was
messianic. And people actually believed and lived by some of the lyrics
that he produced in the songs that he sang.

And so for the crowds outside, I wasn`t surprised at all. In fact,
just a few minutes ago, an ambulance was called because a fan fainted as a
result of the verdict. None of that`s unusual.

And you have to remember, Chris, that this is a man who -- I once read
an article, I think it was in a music magazine in the U.K., which said that
there were three words that you could utter anywhere around the globe and
all three would be recognized. They were "OK," "Amen," and "Michael
Jackson."

MATTHEWS: Well, I saw a bit of that on an African safari in
Mozambique, of all places. The young people that were working with us,
they were helping us, African people and Mozambiquans, were totally
enthralled by this man, especially at the time of his death. Was he as big
as Elvis Presley and the Beatles? He wanted to be.

BASHIR: I think he probably was, you know, and I think he was bigger.
I don`t think that popular music has ever had two albums like "Off the
Wall" and "Thriller." I think that they were incredible works of art, and
I don`t think they`ll ever be surpassed.

And remember, it`s hard today for people to reflect upon that because,
of course, there`s been this horrific tragedy and this death. But
actually, it`s his music that continues to live -- I think will live
forever.

  • Too late, Bashir, to heap praise on the dead guy. All that time with Jackson and you produced what -- a hit piece in exchange for a career move to ABC News (from which you were later booted). See, there's no loyalty anywhere is there? Now you sit, not in prime time, but in 3pm news on the clearly politics-focused MSNBC. If you left, no one would notice or care -- your slot easily filled by another interchangeable part without journalistic credentials. You are neither believable nor relevant.

  • @noirchild58 Amen to that!

  • I don't think he dissed the fans. It's true, what he said about some of the fans viewing Michael as messianic. I am a huge MJ fan and I, too, have felt that Michael is very much like Jesus in that he was here delivering a message of love. I do find it very ironic that Martin Bashir is any kind of positive spokesperson for Michael now, being that he is the one who put the final nail in the coffin, so to speak. Hopefully, Michael is not dead and has simply out-smarted everyone who now praises him.

  • I´d love to use a lot of not "G-rated" words to describe my feelings about Mr. Bashir but I refuse to lower my standard to reach this guy´s level. Who gave this dude permission to express his thoughts about MJ? Although he found at least some nice word to characterize the greatest entertainer, he of all people better should keep his mouth shut instead of reminding everyone, what he did to MJ.

Thanks, LunaJo, for uploading the video, you´re the one showing us very interesting details. :)) *hugs*

  • Bashir is an idiot. No we do not view MJ as a god. He was human and had flaws just like everyone else. The only thing we “criticize” Bashir about is his lack of integrity, dishonest tactics and false portrayal of MJ in his so called documentary. And if he did nothing wrong like he claims, then why is it that he wouldn’t answer for anything when T-Mez was cross-examining him?

  • I Hate Bashir with a Passion for what he did to Michael ... However, Im also Honest, and he in no way dissed Mike's fans, He praised Michael (Too little too late) He rightly expressed the Fans lobve for him.

But aside from that I despise the man....

  • There are wounds that will never heal...

  • It's funny how people are singing Michael's praises now that they think he's d**d. It would be nice if just one of these people would publicly apologize to Katherine and MJ's children for the horrible way they treated Michael.

  • I'll take all of that as wonderful praise, I justabsolutely DETEST whose mouth it's coming out of.

  • I don't watch anything that has Martin Bashir in or on it...he dogged MJ and he makes me sick everytime I see his face and voice..sold his soul to the devil!!

  • Michael Jackson's Music Will Live Forever and MB.hope that you get what you deserve.Long Live The King Of Music & Love

  • I wish Bashir was in the cell as Murray. He is just as guilty!

  • Bashir please ex plane why you turned on this wonderful man then??

  • Bashit,braindead moron.lol
