Every Fourth of July (and several other times annually), the USS Constitution takes her turnaround cruise from the Charlestown Navy Yard into Boston Harbor then to Castle Island, where she turns and fires a 21-gun salute. She does this to retain her active commission in the U.S. Navy, which necessitates her traveling at least one nautical mile per year. She is the oldest active warship in the Navy.
