Most likely Osama Bin laden is dead. But the americans "keep him alive" so they have an excuse to pursue him. The Al Queda want "to keep him alive " aswell to show the world that th U.S can't get him, and even if they say that he'd be a martyr, meaning he'd be a powerfull idol for younger muslim-extremists. They are lying through their teeth. Al Quaeda would be pissing in their pants if the world knew the truth. Imo, it doesn't really matter if he's dead or alive. Extremism sucks.
