I made this sleeping bag so it could be stuffed with leaves or other natural and synthetic improvised insulation.

For this project I bring the best of both worlds together-primitive and modern. I used a few panels from an army surplus parachute to make a stuffable sleeping bag.

The result is an ultralight weight sleeping bag that can be stuffed with a number of different improvised insulation materials such as leaves, grass, plastic bags, crumpled paper and more.

I got teh idea after listening to Tom Brown Jr. describe a primitive debris shelter made from branches and leaves.

  • Awsome idea, but if its below -10 an there is snow on the ground, what will you use for insolation? or is it not meant for use during winter?

  • @StickInc1 Leaves get stuffed into an upper and lower compartment. The lower compartment when stuffed provides excellent insulation from the ground. I tried it in -2C last night and was toasty all night. This sleeping bag is modeled after a primitive debris shelter and should perform very well in -10C and hopefully colder.

  • Why not have some super tough barbage bags and put that on top of the bags..?

  • What keeps the water out. how about heat sealing some garbage bags to the unit?

  • if you putt a zipper or something then the leaves also don't fall out..

  • thats a great idea

  • Use this inside a debris hut with a door and you could stay warm down to well below freezing - without the use of a fire. From someone who lived in a debris hut for a week in a Tom Brown class in New Jersey in October, I know this would work. Great idea. Keep developing it.

I like the idea of a bag within a bag so those prickly leaves don't stick ya' so much!

  • Really good idea Chad. Thanks for sharing

  • Interesting idea Chad. How weather resistant is the material? I guess it would depend on the insulation used and how dry the insulation was.
