this is a short film about a great man in my life...Tom Adam. A humble man who lived in Perthshire, Scotland. The film concentrates on one of his passions, fishing the river Earn. He was in his mid seventies in the first section, then in his eighties in the 2nd part. He was an exceptional fiddler, and could stop a bar dead with his playing. He was also my Grandfather.

  • We were guests of a member of the beat and were lucky enough to fish it on several occasions. Caught my first maybe 10 years ago-17lbs...and the laird saw it! Know the place well and it will always be my favourite... im now in a syndicate on the beat above.....not quite the same though. haha

  • tom was the son of a tennant farmer born in 1900 near the river earn. He worked most of his days for Dewars as a labourer (which was also owned by the laird). After 40 years service he got a gold watch and the Laird gave him special dispensation to fish the private bits of the earn (most unusual for a commoner).

  • He asked if he could take his Grandson (me) and the Laird said yes. He had to record his catches and give 4 out of every five to the Laird! Then when the original Laird died and his son took over the son attempted to take away Tom's right to fish

  • What a fitting title for this clip....made all the more poignant for me as i enjoyed many special days fishing Dupplin water with my dad as a young boy. As it happens i was lucky enough to catch my first salmon on the fly at the very spot on the video, 'The Ministers'. Amazing to see my favourite beat on my favourite river, as it was so many years ago. A MAGICAL PLACE! I would have loved to have sat with old Tom and heard a few stories of the monsters that got away...thanks for making this.

  • that's amazing...the ministers pool...the grilse stream, the clay braes, sauchie loan are the names of my childhood with my grandfather. when he died we scattered his ashes in the ministers pool and a flock of docks flew low level over the water in salute. when did you catch your salmon, and did the laird find out!

  • Really nice clip and a great tribute, I've added it as a response

    Cheers

  • thanks.......i had hoped Tom would have hooked a salmon or sea trout when we were filming......but then again it was more realistic this way ! It's amazing the difference in casting technique. He was one of the best with the split cane.
