1961 (This song was a #1 hit for Shirley Bassey back in 1961. It's a Beautiful Song, beautifully sung by Shirley)

This song climbed to Number 1 on the charts, but because Shirley rarely sang it live & promoted it less often than many of her other hits, most people just don't remember it. That's too bad! This is a beautiful song, and it would be nice if Shirley took the dust off and brought this number back into her live concert schedule which would now be almost 50 years after she recorded it.

ABOUT this song:
Reach for the Stars is a song made popular by Shirley Bassey and written by Austrian pop singer/songwriter Udo Jürgens. As a double A-side single (b/w "Climb Ev'ry Mountain") it went to #1 in the UK charts.

LYRICS:
I reach for the stars
When I reach for your love
For so far above me you always will be
Like a clown longs to be a king in a play
I long for the things that are so far away

I reach for the stars
When I reach for your hand
But stars tumble down
From the clouds to the land
When you come to my arms
In that moment devine
All the stars in the sky
Are mine, all mine

  • I love this song, by bassey I did find a cover from Jean Campbell 1926-2003. Its on youtube, and jean does the song credit, dont know of anymore covers. Thanks for sharing this.....

  • Ican remember seeing her sing this in Glasgows Empire Theatre I wont say how many years ago

  • I'm actually glad there is a STUDIO version of this... Yes, "live" performances are nice, but as 99% of the population never goes to any given concert, live versions are usually kind of a letdown, especially if an artist changes the arrangement. ("Oh, for fun, even though the studio version has a chorus, let's replace that with trumpets.")

  • Love DSB!

  • Just fabulous, very moving, one of my Dad's favourites
