they can stay alive up to 1 hour laying on their back. I can bet on that. I have cameras in my house. One day i went out, got back later and saw my tortoise on his back. After checking the video i found out that he was flipped for 58 minutes.
P.S. That happened this june. Now Tortoise is happily hibernating. By the way, i have 25yrs old russian. I guess heavier tortoises dont stay flipped that long without internal damage. And of course it is a BIG stress for them.
