Fourth and fifth rounds including the two longest jumps in history, shown back to back, by two different athletes! This was probably the best field event competition in history. Mike Powell and Carl Lewis competed against each other in the long jump at the 1991 World Championships. Lewis had a winning streak of more than 60 meets over the previous 10 years going into the meet. Both were at their best on this night which saw four of the seven longest jumps in history! For those with short attention spans, go to the 3:40 mark to see the world record jump.

Yes, it's one of the oldest records in track & Field.

I would only consider a couple of the comments as bogus claims, such as the one that stated "I thought that Cuba's Pedroso, Sal Dino and others of Panama exceeded 9 m." If you're asking what "bogus" means, it basically means false.

No, but I do enjoy replying when somebody asks a question or makes a bogus claim.

Are you kidding? This was one of the greatest sports competitions ever in any sport. A world record had lasted for 23 years and then two different athletes surpassed it on two jumps in a row!?!?!?

Laurie, I'm confused. Who do you love, Mike Powell, Carly Lewis, Dwight Stones (the announcer) or me?

I'm turning 14 years old next month but last year, when I just turned 13, we had a track and field practice and I jumped 5.60m, that's about 18.5 feet. But I still came in third for city finals, because I only got 5.20 metres. Now I can jump 6 metres. And we're having our track meet this coming Tuesday but I still feel like I'm going to do terrible.
