very possibly this is the actual reason of using the old gentleman in differenet scenes. Good catch from you! and of course you're right - perhaps the mafia life is shown in a slightly too romantic way, but why not? The movie industry hitherto only portrayed mafia as breed of soulless and even mindless murderes. So the time had indeed come to show the upside of the mob people also. After all, nothing is shown unrealistically sweet and nice in any of the Godfather's heroes' lives, right?

@BlackCrowNavajo I think that the real reason behind this old man is bigger than just a scene placeholder. The true purpose of him, fist dancing and then appearing at the commision meeting is romantisizing of mafia. Coppola tried to portrate Mafiozi as not just people who wear expensive suits, smoke cigars and deal with serious business but people who just like all of us can also sing, dance and have fun. Godfather is romantization of the mafia.

@wisedevil05 :-) In the depth of the dispute we forget that it's just a movie not a documentary chronicle. I'm sure Coppola simply used one and the same people for multiple scenes, where the role was really minor, and crowd needed to be composed. Really, the movie is so great that makes us talk about it as if genuine events..

@BlackCrowNavajo the guy who is dancing was attending the meeting of 5 families. The only people allowed for the meeting were the heads of the families or their representative (in case one of the Dons could not attend) as well as their consigliere and/or underbosses and bodyguards.
He is obviously not a bodyguard (according to his age and the fact that he was sitting at the table during the meeting) so he must be a very high ranked person...consigliere or underdon

@wisedevil05 Agree. The word "clown was indeed a bit too much, but I meant to say that Top Man of the family, no matter if Corleone or Zalucchi, would not entertain people publicly, even at a happy family event. Pentangeli, and even Clemenza, were indeed some sort of "fun guys", through their personalities. Yet indeed had very considerable weight in the family structure. But still, you know, the status of Capo de tutti capi does require sober and stern decorum.

@BlackCrowNavajo he wasnt acting like a clown. It is a sicilian wedding and he was dancing/singing a national song. Don Vito and Michael would not behave like that but not because they couldnt. Its all about personalities. Don Corleone was a humble and serious man, so was his son Michael. Frank Pentangeli for instance was often acting like a clown, just like in GF2 and he was capo regime - representative of Corleone family in NYC. Capo is a high rank too.

Here's what the old man sings in English: Mama dear come over here N see who's looking by my window, It's the baker boy N oh he's got some bread in his hand, He begins to bake his bread, In this room, In that room, Pretty soon my bun is in the oven. N when my bun begins to grow it messes up my figure! LMFAO My Uncle's fluent in Italian N translated it...
