A recount of more of my feelings and thoughts during the 5.2 earthquake (St. Louis) and why I did not feel the aftershock.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - No significant damage has been reported in Indiana after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 struck the Midwest Friday morning.

The quake just before 4:37 a.m. Central time was centered six miles from West Salem, Ill., and 45 miles from Evansville, Ind. It was felt in such distant cities as Chicago, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and Des Moisaid that may represent two different seismic waves.

He said there likely will be some small aftershocks most of which people will not feel.

The quake is believed to have involved the Wabash fault, a northern extension of the New Madrid fault about six miles north of Mount Carmel, Ill., said United States Geological Survey geophysicist Randy Baldwin.

  • Actually,it turns out that the origin of this quake is an extension of the New Madrid Fault in Missouri called the Wabash Fault in Illinois.

  • well when the New Madrid Quake hit, the Midwest was sparsely populated, unfortunately that's not the story anymore.

  • Not that I know of. Thank goodness it was nothing but a 5.2. I understand some buildings were damaged anyway though. Shame.

  • Oh my God,I probably would have had a heart attack from something like that if debris did not hurt me or do me in. Maybe I would have had the attack and been hurt or killed by debris. Ugh. That must have been terrifying. Those poor people.

  • yup! it also created sand spouts, landslides, and I think it lasted well over a minute. You can just imagine how long the aftershocks lasted. Have you guys had anymore aftershocks since the initial 5.2 quake?

  • It was at least an 8.0. It was so strong that it actually changed the course of the Mississippi River.

  • Ha. Come on now, give me a break. It is not like we have earthquakes all the time. What would really be weird if somebody in California was not familiar with the San Andreas fault. Not that would be really bad.:-)

  • What was it on the Richter scale?
