The Search for A.Z. and "Sarah D"

Nearly ten years ago, some friends and I found a scratched CD which had clearly been thrown from a moving vehicle. Track 20 was a self-made "remix" of Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady." Unable to find a more romantic love-ballad, the creator of this song, identified only as A.Z., attempts to convince Sarah Davey, a girl from his high school, to go out with him.

For years, friends and I have circulated this anthem of love to anyone who will listen. You might think we did this to mock or make fun of A.Z., but that couldn't be further from the truth. Over the years, this song has brought joy to so many people, drunk and sober alike. With a sense of nostalgia, it evokes fond feelings and memories from my adolescence. For this, A.Z. deserves my sincerest gratitude. The fact is, anyone who can integrate Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Easy-Bake ovens into a rap song deserves rounds of applause and praise.

But we've always been left wondering one profound question: who is A.Z. and did he and "Sarah D" ever get together. The curb was an unfortunate final resting place for a CD that professed so much affection, (even if the juxtaposition of South Park soundbites and It's Raining Men is somewhat questionable). But perhaps Sarah Davey didn't mean to discard this gem of a song, and if she did, I, for one, think she was acting a bit rash. I think it's time "Sarah D" gives A.Z. a chance. And even if she doesn't, I have just one thing to say to the anonymous A.Z.: There's a "Sarah D" out there for everyone. Keep on, my friend.
