MaximsNewsNetwork: 05 September 2009 - UNTV: U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls for faster work on a new climate treaty to fend off what he said could be economic disaster and a rise in sea levels of up to 2 metres (6.5 ft) by 2100.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (3 September) called for faster work on a new climate treaty to fend off what he said could be economic disaster and a rise in sea levels of up to 2 meters by 2100.
In his speech to the World Climate Conference in Geneva, Ban said that "climate change could spell widespread economic disaster," and that the answer lies in green growth, sustainable growth."
Dr. Rajendra Kumar Pachuri, the Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said that in economic terms, the cost of mitigation will be no more than 3% of GDP which means that the level of prosperity that the world will have reached in 2030 will at best be postponed by a year.
The Secretary-General, who is returning from a trip to view the melting Arctic ice off Norway, told a packed press conference that we must act now noting that greenhouse gas emissions were still rising fast despite plans to rein in growth, and called on national leaders to act as global leaders and take the initiative when they believe that it is something they have to do, even despite domestic opinions.
On Tuesday, the Secretary General visited Ny Alesund in Norway, claimed to be the northernmost human settlement in the world. There he commented that melting artic ice will cause sea level rise two meters high, which will be devastating if we do not take urgent action.
The Geneva conference is agreeing to set up a "Global Framework for Climate Services" to help the world adapt to changes such as more floods, wildfires, droughts, rising seas or more disease.
The conference of about 1,500 delegates including about 20 heads of state and 80 ministers, is agreeing a new system to improve monitoring and information of the climate to help everyone from farmers to energy investors.
