Project Renewal is a student based endeavor aiming at community development on various levels, the bulk of which activities is hoped to be carried out in the Korail settlement in Banani. The project is being organized by House of Volunteers (HoV) at BRAC University (www.houseofvolunteers.org) with One Degree Initiative (www.1di.org) and Finding Bangladesh (www.findingbangladesh.com) as partners. In total, there are approximately 150 young volunteers involved in this project.

Project Renewal Overview:

The project currently has five phases planned. The following is a synopsis of each.

In Phase 01 we aim to carry out a professional level research in order to determine the demand for clean lakes both from the residents living inside the slums and from those living in the surrounding apartments. How the demand varies as per their demographics, environment and health awareness will also be measured. The research findings are aimed to incentivize the govt. and other private organizations to actively step into the water body development scenario.

Phase 02 of Project Renewal is to step into the Korail settlement and properly clean a portion of the Banani-Gulshan Lake as an exposure activity for young volunteers and also as an awareness campaign for the settlers living there.

Phase 03 will involve learning how to make recycled paper by combining used paper and Kochuripana (water hyacinth) that was collected from Phase 02. An additional component will include awareness building for reducing paper waste amongst the members.

Phase 04 of Project Renewal will commence in May 2011 and will involve initiating a sustainable small social business through a job creation process. Selected members will teach women from the Korail settlement to make recycled paper as per the process in Phase 03. Various products will then be made and an outlet will be provided for the women to sell their products. Following this cycle a revenue generation system for the women is hoped to be created.

Phase 05 will involve organizing a seminar highlighting Project Renewal and the research findings of Phase 01 along with the release of a Research Publication and Policy Brief. The published materials is planned to be distributed to numerous universities and relevant institutions, with hopes of spreading the awareness.

  • Hello! I was wondering if you could give me an estimate for how deep the banani and gulshan lakes are on average? It is vital for a project I'm doing.
