  • @stargirlsusan If by "color" you mean the trombones doubling the voices, they had traditionally been used in church music to double voices in the choir. This doubling also had the practical function of preventing the young singers, who performed a different cantata every Sunday and therefore had only a few days to practice, from losing their places in the music. The use of obbligato string parts (here playing the suspirans motif) was also traditional since the early 17th c..
