Gays have formed bars as a safe way to meet, without having to face prejudice. This is a world with a lot of homophobia still, and where everyone is assumed straight unless otherwise stated. It's either to find one another to meet and socialize in a bar or other place that caters to gays, because gays are a minority among the population as a whole. A straight man attacking someone for "being too gay" is very insecure with his own identity. It shouldn't threaten him if he is secure with himself.
