the SCARLETs

Project: Choose a book that most of you have read in the past and select 10 existing songs that relates to its main themes. Prepare a presentation of your music album to the class which includes the music CD, album cover, and lyrics.

Setup: My group chose the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and we decided to become a band to add some spice to the project! We call ourselves "The Scarlets" and we did a short interview [sorry we didnt go full out in detail but we had to say something to the class :P] and we performed the 4 top songs from the album that coincides with 4 important scenes/themes of the book.

Music Video 1: Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day.
This song relates to the protagonist Hester Prynne because she alone faces the punishments from the strict Puritan society. Through the challenges she faces in the novel, Hester reflects the idea of feminism as she accepts her punishments and sticks to her inner self rather than to be tied down in a color-less community.

Music Video 2: One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey and Boyz to Men. This video is portrayed by Hester and Dimmesdale [the one with the mask]. Hester is already married to a boring man name Roger who has disappeared for 2 years. In his disappearance, Hester has committed adultery with her true love, a highly honored priest name Dimmesdale. Hester, who made no effort to hide her child, is caught & ridiculed by the public while the coward Dimmesdale hides his identity as the father. Roger makes his return and is furious to know that the father left Hester alone to face the shame. He vows revenge and once he finds out that the father is Dimmesdale, he does everything in his power to destroy the clergy's life. This video shows a moment of passion between Hester and Dimmesdale that leads into a image of Roger's negative pull that is trying to break the love apart. In the novel, Dimmesdale who is getting devoured by guilt and the dark influence of Roger, starts to distant himself from his family. He is lost in a maze and we have the character wear a half mask to show that he is two-faced and a hypocrite.

Music Video 3: A Beautiful Lie by 30 Seconds To Mars.
This video basically shows how Roger's life only revolves around Dimmesdale's life. He dedicated the rest of his life to destroy another and once his mission is completed, he will have nothing more to live for. The video opens to Roger's vision and shows how he is like a wild beast that is stalking Dimmesdale [again with the hypocrite mask]. btw we used a rose to symbolize the love between Hester and Dimmesdale. In this video Roger is seen with the rose and throws it away. A picture of a frozen rose and a bleeding rose comes in to play the significance of the dark influence.




Music Video 4: Papercut by Linkin Park.
This video shows how Dimmesdale's mind, body, and soul is destroyed through guilt. In the novel, Dimmesdale recognizes himself as a hypocrite in the mirror and mocks & laughs at what he has become. Though he sees and knows the cause of what he has become, Dimmesdale lacks the courage to end it all.
