People shouldn't pick up baby deers unless they know the mom is for sure dead. Sounds like they knew they shouldn't have picked up the baby either and did anyway. Mom's leave the baby because she doesn't want attract predators to her baby.

No parental deer would accept this little one back, it smells of humans. Smooth move ex-lax. Even in the remote chance the the mother left him there to search for food, the second she came back to that spot and smelled "human." She will leave and not return. You sent a little one, not even old enough to search for food, to his death

I saved my baby, also called Bambi, when it's mom was hit by a big semi truck. Poor thing. Anyways, I have my baby. He's the sweetest ever!!!

I doubt that the fawn would be hiding in tall grass if the mother had died. The fawn wasn't HIDING there, it was HIDDEN there while its mother went to look for food. Something mother deers do before going off to look for food.
