The first fully automatic self-powered machine gun, built in 1884.

First used in combat by the British in The First Matabele War, 1893 to 1894.

Well the gun you see here is not simply a "Maxim gun" its a Maxim Nordenfeldt 1895 the first maxim gun had a much smaller water cooling

yep that's hiram maxim - trademark hat and white beard - he was a hell of a salesman as well as an engineer. That's obviously a very early model working with black powder instead of post 1890? depending on the country smokless powder. The effectiveness of the maxim would have been much less if not for smokeless powder, wonderful little clip. Thanks for sharing
