Testing slow motion settings on camera and in post. Shot with a Panasonic DVX100b and edited in Sony Vegas 6. All 3 tests were edited in a 24p timeline.

1st test:
24p with 1/48 shutter speed
slowed down to 60% of original speed

2nd test:
30p with 1/30 shutter speed
slowed down to 80% of original speed

3rd test:
60i with 1/120 shutter speed
slowed down to 40% of original speed

  • what do you mean by "24p time line"

  • The project settings in Vegas were set to 24p.

  • Man... the 60i -1/120 - 40% speed looks very smooth and beautiful. How could you achieve this. Is it some kind of plugin or something? I have the same video cam and Vegas. I tried but it didn't happen smooth like yours. Can you please explain how to do it or if there is a pattern you followed to do it and can you give me the link?

    Thanks...

  • No plug-in just 60i with the shutter speed at 1/120. Then import it into vegas and take the velocity down to 40% with a velocity envelope or by holding down ctrl and dragging the clip down to 40%. That's all I did.

Also, I did have all of these on the same timeline when I made this video and I have since read that 30p can sometimes be hard to manage on the same timeline as 24p or something like that. So if I were to do this test again I would put these all on separate timelines.

  • Thank you so much ... I am now shooting some pretty slo mo!

  • 60i is soo sick

  • so glad im not the only one who thinks 60i is useful for something lol. I did the test by throwing a water bottle up in the air.

  • AWESOME!!!! Thanks man. I knew it. 60i would be the best.

  • Hey man, when you film a video in 24p, capture it with Sony Vegas to 30fps basically, or 60i i guess, when you render as 24p, does that mean it converts it back to 24p with whatever pulldown you choose?
