The Substitute is an adaptation of one of the stories in the book Wayside School is Falling Down by Louis Sacher.
The children in one of the classes at Wayside School arrive at school one morning to find that their teacher is absent and that a substitute teacher has been assigned to teach them. The children enjoy having substitute teachers as they like to play mean and horrible tricks on them.
The name of the substitute teacher is Mr. Franklin. Ben answers one of Mr. Franklin's questions and tells Mr. Franklin his name. All of the children in the class tell Mr. Franklin that their names are Ben when they answer questions.
The children pay attention and work hard all day in the hope that Mr. Franklin will call upon them. At the end of the day the children tell Mr. Franklin that they learned more in a day than they usually do in a month and ask if he will return the next day.
Mr. Franklin explains that they may address him by his first name now that they are all friends. One of the children asks Mr. Franklin what his first name is and he tells them that his first name (like theirs) is Ben.
