VICTORIA - Winning an Academy Award can change your life.
For the filmmakers and actors in "The Kings Speech", a movie about King George IV's often debilitating stutter, last night's Oscar win is a crowning achievement.
Speech pathologist believe the win will benefit people living with speech impediments.
Colin Firth who won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of the stuttering king, hopes the movie will do some good.
Groups that support people who stutter say it has. They claim the movie has done more in the past few months than they have been able to achieve in more than 65 years.
About one percent of the population stutters, but so far research hasn't come up with a concrete reason why.
Experts say if your child is suffering from a speech impediment it's important to get help early; preferably when they are in pre-school or elementary school.
The Greater Victoria School District suggests talking to teachers or principals for help.
