Contrary to popular belief (especially in the UK), this song has nothing whatsoever to do with the plague or black death. However, the superstition wasn't helped by the additional (spoken) lyrics I remember from my youth: "Ashes in the water, ashes in the sea. We all jump up with a 1, 2, 3!" which allegedly refer to the (false) belief that The Great Fire of London killed off The Plague.
