Thank you for the link.
This looks like a great project.
Still, I do wish the Syrian government would spend some of that money on its military, specifically its air force to block Israeli intrusions.

I saw some pictures of this project on facebook. It is so big, and they said something about completing phase one end of 2010.

wow this it will be in syria????when?

I guess a well equipped air force would be some what of a defense against Israel's planes, but I don't think it would be as effective as a SAM, because in our time the only weapons we receive are just not technologically advanced as the enemy's.
Thus, it would be statistically correct to say that a Syrian MiG would win in a dogfight against a Israeli F-16. Syria recently purchased a lot of these from Russia, and the MiG just isn't made for interception.

But Israel's air force isn't just shock&awe. It is its primary tool of destruction. Look at Lebanon, most of those killed were from air attacks, not tanks or ground soldiers.
A strong Syrian air force isn't just to win wars, but to protect Syrians from mass murder of the kind that Israel has inflicted on Lebanon and Gaza.

Anti- air and anti-tank in Syrias current political state should be top priority, because they are primarily defensive. All Israel does it shock and awe, and then send in tanks and troops. In the future Syria may want to invest in a better air force, but currently everything purchased from the Russians, and others, but mostly Russians is second grade. Iran has a mass amount of anti-tank and surface to air, if Israel were to attack them it is easy to know the outcome.
-
But what good is the Navy? Israel hardly uses its Navy for offensive purposes anyhow.
Anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons are good, and they were enormously useful for the Egyptions in 1973, but now the Israeli air-forces' technology is too advanced for these to work alone (Israel's attacks against Syria despite the latter's new radar systems prove this).
I still say air force is the desicive factor in any conflict, big or small. The Syrian air-force should always get top priority.

Air Force is for offensive purposes. Syrian military must advances in Anti-Tank, Surface to Air missles (shoot down planes), and Navy. Gathering troops for an army is easy, but their weapons should be upgraded from the cheap standard Kalashnikov to a M4 or 16. I like to see the advance of my country, and hope it continues to flourish throughout the region.

Good point.

I understand, but the money is ill-spent. I recall reading that Syria basically gave up on up-dating its air force, concentrating instead on ground forces and and air defences (which don't seem to stop the Israelis anyway).
Maybe Syria shouldn't spend any more on the militay, but it should concentrarte the budget more on the air force than tanks and other wasteful things.
