The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team pushed their season-long win streak to 10 games with a series-clinching, doubleheader sweep of UT Dallas on Saturday at Irwin Field, rallying with a three-run sixth to win the opener and exploding for 17 runs off 24 hits in the finale.

Winners in 16 of its last 19 and 10 in-a-row, UT Tyler improved to 19-7 overall and 8-0 in ASC East play to stretch its lead to three games in the league standings. UTD dropped to 13-10 and 3-5 in the ASC.

The Patriots needed another late-inning rally in the final innings to pull out a come-from-behind win in the opening game of the day, after rallying with a five-run eighth the night before for an 8-4 win.

Trailing 3-2 into the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Clakley delivered the game-tying RBI-triple to left-center before the Patriots pushed across two more runs to make it a 5-3 lead. Jake Ashley reached on an error by the pitcher, scoring Clakley, while Corey Henderson capped the inning with a two-out RBI-single.

UTD threatened by putting runners on the corners in the top of the seventh and the go-ahead run at the plate, but couldn't find a way to move the runners around as Matt Schimpf got Haliford to go down looking on strikes. Schimpf, who failed to record an out in relief the night before, rebounded in throwing 1 2/3 innings of relief with two hits and no runs to earn his second win of the year.

The UT Tyler and UTD bats each came alive in the series finale, with the teams exploding for 27 runs off 35 hits.

What looked like more of a football finish, 17-10, the game provided plenty of offense that kept both pitching staffs busy. Each team tossed four pitchers, with neither starter lasting more than three innings.

The Patriots took an early 2-0 lead off senior Nathan Skeen's third homer of the year a two-run shot to left-center but it was short-lived as the Comets responded with a five-run second to take a 5-2 lead.

Jameson Holt was chased after just 1 1/3 innings for UT Tyler, surrendering five runs (all earned) off four hits. Clint Sharp entered with one down in the second and would take the Patriots through the seventh.

UT Tyler, however, came firing right back with a pair of four-run third and fourth innings to retake the lead for good at 10-5, giving Sharp plenty of run support to work on the bump. Sharp tossed 5 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits and just two runs, and was relieved in the eighth with a 13-6 cushion.

UTD scored five runs over the final four innings and got to within 13-8, but it was just too much Patriot offense again down the stretch as they pulled away with two runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to make the final 17-10 in favor of UT Tyler.

A total of five home runs were hit in the nightcap, including another two home run outing for Clakley his second multi-homer game this season. The freshman finished a career-high 5-for-6 from the plate with seven RBIs, pacing seven Patriots with multi-hit games, including Aaron McCain who was also 4-for-4 on the game.

The Patriots will host Austin College in a single game Tuesday at Irwin Field with first pitch set for 6 p.m. The 'Roos are fresh off a three-game series sweep of Millsaps College.
