He probably deliberately killed him. Considering that Death is the only of the Horsemen that doesn't need the ring to portray his powers, I'd imagine he did it intentionally for sheer rude attitude (of the other guy).

Death is one of my favorite characters. Like, even though he's scary as hell (literally) he's also surprisingly merciful with the way he acts towards Dean and Sam. He scares them into submission, but he also did help them a lot, giving Sam's soul back, offering up his ring to Dean, giving them the opportunity to open purgatory, etc. He's scary, but somehow, he's the good guy. And he has great taste in food.

This scene and the final scene from season 8..angels falling...are quite possibly the best scenes I have ever seen from any show ever..the music...the way it's filmed..both were breathtaking and amazing...just brilliant!
