The blood was from where he was hitting himself on the head with the microphone from memory. I remember him swigging from a bottle of vodka throughout the set. But it really is just as you said, they came to Reading largely from nowhere with a sound that ripped into the afternoon crowd. Listening to this makes the hairs on my neck stand up.
