Viking, a Paso Fino stallion, had a history of bolting in terror and running for over an hour at a time in the round pen before stopping. After months of training to quiet his fears (trainers Ernie Salcido and Dacodah Herkehoff), Viking seems to be over this problem. However, even the most perfect horse has the potential to bolt. To be truly safe, a horse should learn the one rein halt, for no horse can keep running if his nose is touching his shoulder. However, horse and rider must be trained first to do this properly, or else you get the movie effect of a horse getting shot and collapsing in mid-gallop. Don't try this unless you have professional training! Rider is Mike Bertin, Viking's co-owner, with trainer Dacodah Herkenhoff.
I do the same exercises with my pasos :) It's a very good technique to use!
