German magic lantern from the maker JS (Jean Schoenner). Made around 1900. Maltese cross movement for 'moving pictures' effect for 35mm film.

Very nice example - looks almost new.

Can anyone explain why all toy 35mm projectors that are fitted with a Maltese type movement, use a five arm cross?

Every full size 35mm projector (except for some of the earliest models), that I've ever seen use a four-arm movement.

    Any ideas?
