Video footage of VSO's post-tsunami work in Sri Lanka

When the South Asia tsunami struck in December 2004, 40,000 Sri Lankans were killed and 79,000 made homeless, with thousands forced to live in temporary camps.

Traumatised and terrified of a recurrence, many lived in fear of the sea, no longer able to see it as a source of income and livelihood.

Within a week of the tsunami, VSO staff and volunteers were working with local partners to provide psycho-social care to those in the camps, helping them come to terms with their trauma and start to look to the future.

More recently that work has focused on longer-term resettlement, helping communities re-establish themselves and their livelihoods. Our new video describes some of this work.
