Janáček: Jenůfa Act I - Roberta Alexander, Anja Silja

A scene from the first Act of Janacek's first major success. In Czech the opera is called Její pastorkyňa (Her stepdaughter, a title that actually includes the two female protagonists, without naming either) Jenůfa is in many ways a Czech verismo opera. Set in a rustic village, like Smetana's Bartered Bride, the boy loves girl story goes horribly wrong turning into a tragedy of unwanted pregnancy, violence and mutilation, social hypocrisy and infanticide, though in some ways it has a happy end in so much as Jenůfa and Laca pick up the pieces of their shattered lives and vow to make a fresh start together.

In this scene, Števa arrives, drunk because he has been celebrating the fact that he was not conscripted. Though Jenůfa is happy because they will now be able to marry, she is angry because of his drinking. Števa starts throwing his money around amid the general good cheer and dancing when Jenůfa's step mother Kostelnička appears; her stern figure is enough to bring the celebrations to a sudden halt. She is angered by Števa's behaviour, which reminds her of his father (with whom she had an unhappy love story many years before), she fears Števa will not be a good husband to Jenůfa since he shows the same lack of moral fibre. She refuses to give her consent to their marriage unless Števa can prove himself worthy over the following year. Jenůfa is distraught (her step-mother doesn't know she is pregnant and needs to marry before the fact becomes noticeable), only the old Grandmother dares to defend Števa but to no avail. Kostelnička orders the company to disband. Only Laca is satisfied, he loves Jenůfa and is deeply jealous.

@ArpiCZ Nejsem žádný separatista,na to pozor!!! Jen mám rád svojí krajinu a zemi, kterou považuji za svoji vlast. A je pravda, že se Janáček narodil v době, kdy existovalo tzv. markrabství moravské a lidé se považovali za Moravany..samozřejmě mluvící česky, ale i to je sporné...Tedy nevím proč by se měl Janáček považovat za českého skladatele, když se narodil, poměrně celý svůj život tvořil a zemřel na Moravě. To je stejné, jako bychom považovali Dvořáka za moravského skladatele-nesmysl, že?!?!

@jumpr88 "ni Moravák, ni Čech, neb Lach, tedy Slezan". Patrně jste sám mnoho nečetl, zejména alespoň některý životopis Janáčka, jeho soukromou korespondenci apod. Že si dnes vygooglujete mapu Slezska (mimochodem, která se v dějinách hodně měnila) z Vás experta na Janáčka ani na Slezsko ještě neudělá. Ale to já taky nejsem.

@martinfrehley Hádat se nemusíme, praotec Čech přibyl na Říp ještě několik století před tím. A víš proč reaguji na podobné hlášky o moravském národu nebo moravštině? Protože jsem z UH, prožil jsem tam půlku života a musím se za Moraváky (ne Moravany) stydět. Každý učitel češtiny potvrdí, že se na Moravě mluví spisovnější češtinou než v Čechách, co je tedy ta "moravština"? Ogaři by měli zajet někam dál, než do vedlejší dědiny, pak jim ten provincionalismus přijde směšný jako mě.

@ArpiCZ Nechci se hádat, ale Moravská národnost existovala dříve než česká. My jsme tu měli pokřtěný národ a arcibiskupa Metoděje v době, kdy se česká knížata pouze sporadicky nechávala křtít od Němců.

že by byl Janáček český autor, to se musí obracet v hrobě, vždy byl veskrze moravský a za jeho časú bylo Česko cizinou na západě,něco jako Česká republika v životě nepoznal. Nicméně jde nejen o púvpod ale hlavně o hudbu a ta je veskrze moravská.

Moravané nikoliv mečem, ale vírou, moudrostí a pracovitostí, šířili svůj věhlas po světě. Velkou zásluhu na tom mají zejména Jan Ámos Komenský-Moravský, Johann Gregor Mendel, Leoš Janáček, ale samozřejmě i další. Například dodnes existuje Moravská církev, díky které celá Severní Amerika zdobí své vánoční stromky Moravskou hvězdou a jejich misijní činností vznikli dokonce i „Moravští indiáni“.
