@Solangeag1 In landmark study of 50 families, the single greatest predictor of school achievement was the ratio of positive to negative social interactions which child had between 11 - 18 months. Professional class mother will avoid saying no or speaking harshly to her baby. Her ratio of positive to negative interactions: 4 to 1. In welfare class families, the ratio of positive to negative is 1 to 4. (In successful marriages , the ratio of positive to negative is 5 to 1. Being nice counts.)

@Solangeag1 I am not sure why U say it came out the wrong way. Please, pinpoint the offensive sentence or words. I did not say anything about the character of the people, I was talking about the culture of the people. In professional class families, a 3 year old has heard three million words. In a welfare class family, a 3 year old has heard one million words. That's a carefully recorded observation from a study of 50 families.

@StJouish yeah, that's what I thought you meant to express, but I think it came out the wrong way! I'm from Brazil, and even if I'm lucky enough to have been born in the "right" social class (I wouldn't even be discussing here if I hadn't :P), trust me, I know what that means...there are very few places like Brazil where you can see so much social disparity (and where people are still dying for lack of food - but according to our governments that doesn't exist anymore, right? LOL)

Sorry everybody. Some of my posts do not make sense. I was confused. I often log on and see the UC Davis TV video of Carmina Burana. Awesome, young African-American soprano for Carmina Burana.

@Solangeag1 Don't shoot the messenger. The kids I taught didn't have food or heated homes in the winter. Very few had fathers living in the home. A lot had fathers living in jail. A lot of their recreational time was spent watching TV. (My own kids hardly every had time for TV—the vast wasteland.) Much classical music on TV? Sure on PBS. But they weren't watching PBS. Some of the kids were resistive to learning standard English. Sorry, people do judge you by your clothes and your speech.

@Solangeag1 I taught school in an urban-poor school district. I raised my kids in Lake Forest, Illinois and Ladue, Missouri-—both well-to-do school districts. My kids participated in sports, attended religious school, had lessons on multiple instruments. Most of my students in University City did not have these advantages. Culture means quite a lot. Read "Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young American Children."

@StJouish Your comment DID sound terrible, you know. But I think I understand what you meant (correct me if I got it wrong :P)...it's *not*, as some people are saying, a matter of taste, or a matter of liking hip hop/rap music/funk better than classical music...it's a matter of being excluded in every sense of the word, of not having access to this kind of music for economic, social and political reasons.

the conductor baldini is Argentinian with Lebanese and Italian heritage. I don't think prejudice is an issue for him or that orchestra - it says more about this 'bachgod' character than anything else... I have seen people who just like to provoke debate on Utube - I will give him the benefit of that doubt

Hello everyone,
Please keep the racial debates to a minimum. UCTV has uploaded these videos for our entertainment, and enjoyment. Debates on other relevant issues(instruments, details of the composer, history, and the like) seem to be fine, but keep the higher, more appreciable class sections of Youtube (such as these fine recordings) free of irrelevant, offensive, and racial chatter.
-Thanks.

Only Educated people can understand the intelligence there is involved in bringing together several types of brass string and percussional instrumments along with selecting the individualss who play them . Its nothing to do with race, religion or minority. ITS ABOUT MUSIC!! Everyone has thier very own taste and preference in the arts, Every individual has thier very own idea , thought or reason why they select what they find solice in.
