SURHURI "Sheep Leg" is the New Year Celebration among Chuvash. Some Northern Bashkirians have a similar holiday with the same name (Harkayaq).
The symbolisms of holiday are common for Eurasia, they find meaning and realizations in cultures of Middle East, Central Asia and Europe too.
Because of calendar changes in Russia the dates and rituals of Chuvash holidays were confused with each other.
Originally Surhuri is the New Year Celebration. It starts by Orthodox tradition celebrated on January 13. Chuvash would symbolically rid themselves of evils of last year and like in Middle East the symbol of New Year would be budded grains.
Youngsters dress up as evil (Şvetke) and "trick or treat" villagers. The hosts are supposed to treat with some nuts, when there were no nuts the would bake special pastry.
With Christianity the tradition of singing Christmas songs came.
In the video you see an interpretation of holiday with traditional elements of bribing, fortune telling and lots of fun!

  • Здесь показаны красивые древние традиции - колорит, духовность, цивилизованность. Дешевые чебоксарские понты (фонтанчик на заливе и несколько неприметных построек) можно посмотреть в других видео.

  • What language are they speaking? Is it Russian?

  • Why, it's Chuvash.

  • Where are all the immigrant kids from Africa and Latin America? I sure hope that this video doesn't give White European-Americans any ideas that they can keep _their_ neighbourhoods pure.

  • i hope you're just kidding :) immigrant kids from Africa, never mind Latin America are so rare (evidently none) in Chuvashia. It's shown as it is.

  • @BalanKhan

    Most of them ended up in Hungary.

    HUNGARIA = ONOGURIA.

  • @DanishRoyalFan15

    it is the Turkic/ Altaic language Chuvash.

    There is some difference between Turkish. Some voices change: l>sh, r>z, ch> t, u>a. Any way I don't understand the kids.

  • @roksancastle Yes, all inmigrants are in western Europe. If you go to any town in western Europe you will see rap festivals or Halloween parties instead of old traditions like that... Is this the world you want??

    Fortunately for Russians, their politicians are more responsable, and they know inmigration is bad for their society.
