visit http://biometrics.kertechno.net to debate the ethical issues regarding the development of these technologies.

New biometric technologies for identification and monitoring of citizens' movements are central to the expansion of the EU. Biometrics is already included in new passports, visas and residence permits, and increasingly also connected to interoperable information systems for sharing of data, available to law enforcement and justice. Biometric technologies may improve document security and increase efficiency and user friendliness. Intentionally designed to identify and monitor people, there is also a great potential for misuse.

What about these issues?
Social justice - Can biometrics promote freedom of movement, security and justice? Could new mechanisms of exclusion and discrimination be built into these systems?
Surveillance and privacy - What does "privacy" mean for you? Could biometrics improve privacy and security at the same time?
Trust in technology and in government - Can governments and operators be entrusted with keeping our personal and biometric information?

TECHNOLIFE is a research project about ethical issues on new and emerging technologies. The project involves research groups from 7 European countries. See http://www.technolife.no for more information.

  • @luclin92 What if governments decide that keeping a cat is illegal or being a Christian?

  • @luclin92 The problem comes when the governments start to redefine 'illegal'.

Consider the implications if they decided that certain religions, political parties or even nationalities were a threat to public safety. All your data is there in the database. Where you work, when you socialise, what you spend your money on...

Or, in a slightly less paranoid scenario, how do they fund the project and ensure the security of your personal data? Who can access the data, and under what circumstances?

  • this is not really a problem i theory since you wont get in problems unless you do something illegal.

  • xD.

  • Creepy and distopian. How exactly citizens are supposed to secure their privacy and safety from government?

  • Hi, I like money :)

  • Don't fall for the trap, don't respond to this video. They are looking for feedback to refine their propaganda.

  • If this technology is used right then it should make things safer. I say lets go for it.
