Guys I'm thinking about starting to build my own rack. I don't have anything yet. Once I tried a Powerball head and cabinet at a store and I was blown away by it (almost literaly). I just loved that sound. I've seen people saying a many good thinks about this pre-amp especially that it can emulate the Powerball. So my question is can the E530 be used live, or does it require somekind of combination for it, or even is it like a bedroom/recording kind of thing?

ha" played them V3"s and they lack REAL bottom end. can you say "THIN"....!!

can you use a midi controller with that preamp?

Hey guys im a bedroom user , i heard this thing have an internal 1.5 watts power amp i could use and hook it up to a cabinet or play silently with headphone. that would be exactly what i need as i could play in my bedroom and if later i play gig i could still use it . anyone can tell me if this thing directly connect with a 4x12 or 2x12 cabinet would sound great . i only need 1 watts thats why i never bought a tube amp , too loud for my need . i have a vypyr modeler now .

Does anyone know any good sounding rack mount pre for blues rock jazz type sound????

You know after roughly playing 30 some years using 6ft high end racks to many differing heads,,, pleaassse do not tell me what sounds good. I have seen many big money bands from Metalica and Megadeth use rack gear. A good player knows how to get good sound. A power amp has little character in a rig if its not tube and freaking tubes degrade, they do not last. Moving to a rack system is less problems and easier move. I currently use a modified Carvin V3, I wager it sounds better than yours.

@CarvinTone eh? Ever notice the pro players always use heads? not preamp+power amp. doesnt sound like youve noticed so I figure you never wondered why they do, either. It's simple - a ead is a 'matched' preamp and power amp design that compliments each other. If youve found a preamp that sounds good with a carvin (!! hahah) power amp, cool. but i bet it 'actually' doesnt.
why would the owner of a head/cab buy a preamp? easy - flexibility in adding tones to your already existing amp in 1U rack

Get this kids, a PREAMP is made to run into a POWER Amp. This is a Stereo Unit with L&R feeds. The 1.5A out is for headphones. The ENGL cranks, it just needs a straight on Power amp. I use the Carvin Power amp with the dual 15 band EQ on each side, amazing. Best quality tones ever.

Maybe he just wanted a pre yet doesn't have a power amp so hes just slaving his head. Still, I agree quite a waste of a nice head if this is his actual rig set up.
I saw a gig where the guitarist slaved the power section of a triple rectifier to this 500$ preamp. only sense I see out of it is that he tours with his rack rigged w/ effects and had all the channel switches set up and didn't want to bother.
I have one of these coupled with a vht power amp and it sounds pretty heavy.

For Christ's sake this is a preamp for driving a power amp not a amp loop pedal. It's a waste of both. The H&K does not need this and a straight power amp makes the ENGL sound better. This gets close to what the ENGL dist can really do. Better than some others I have seen. Really shrill here as well, it's called EQ, where is the low end drive?
Good stuff, dude! Engl E530 rules!! I have one too hooked to a Mesa 2:100 and a Recto 4X12. My question is, How do you like that Switchblade head?? I'm thinking about getting one. Thank you!

Just plug in the preamp to the return jack of the loop. =)

is that preamp nice for a more vintage sound? like more blues or jazz tone...or like vinnie moore sound?

I would not buy this preamp for vintage sound. It's way to modern in its tone for that.
