Yo Yo Ma can never match Rostropovich's achievement with his fame. If it were not for Slava, the cello repertoire would be very limited. Most of the masterpieces for the cello in the 20th century was made in the hope of composers that Rostropovich will play it.

@cowlover110 I think yo yo ma is overrated
-
@CODFOROCD yo yo ma is not the best cellist alive... he's just the most famous...

No puedo saber lo que hubo hace mucho tiempo en el mundo, pero seguro que Rostropovich ha sido uno de los mejores intérpretes del cello del mundo

What a monument of a person.

he does that to play the actual notes written in the music.... this particular suite is for the A string tuned down a whole tone so instead of A D G C, it's G D G C but since Rostropovich is the ultimate, he decided to play it in normal tuning and still play most of the actual notes... =D

this has always been the hardest part of the suite to me...especially Gavotte I...it's even harder than the prelude
-
And the slowest one

I have just realised he is the only one who uses thumb on string in this piece 1011 Gavotte
Rostropovich was and is the best cellist that ever walked the earth. Not to say that Pablo Casals was horrible, I appreciate his playing as I do Maisky's. No one however, can match his talent and grace. It's magical when he plays. The closest thing we have now is Yo Yo Ma, and even he, the best cellist alive in my opinion, cannot and will not match Rostropovich. It is a shame that I never had a chance to meet him before he died. That's what I get for being lazy. Rest in peace master...
