Well, lookie here -- apparently it's been on the Net for some time, and was even recently featured in a videogame magazine. Just found out about it today. Yes, these are vintage Final Fantasy VII battle models running in a custom engine, coded by someone who is apparently awesome.

The gameplay's pretty solid, and I'd say it's inspired by Devil May Cry more than anything else. With some alteration to the physics, upgraded models and environments, and some extra attention given to the in-game animations, this could be one of the next big things in videogame fandom if others take it into their own hands and develop it further.

Even more awesomely, the engine and assets are entirely customizable; I was able to swap out the tracks originally in the game with some of the ones you hear here, from Vagrant Story and Legend of Mana. Models are customizable too; this means someone had better grab Tifa's model from Kingdom Hearts II and put it in here sometime. Presumably other playable characters besides Tifa could be implemented with some engine recoding.

If you're interested in checking this awesome little fangame and game engine out, PM me. Although the author has a Youtube channel (and yes, a pic of this is even in a game mag, wide out in the open), I'm erring on the side of caution given, well...you know.

  • what kind of engine does thos run on

  • The author coded an engine from scratch I believe. The development kit is available with the game itself IIRC, so any fan looking to brush up his or her coding skills could take it further. The engine might be coded in C++ but I could be mistaken.

  • The author recommends a Pentium III/1Gigahertz processor for your PC. I'm running fairly well on the lower display settings with an AMD Sempron Processor though. It was slower than I-don't-know-what when I first loaded it, but unchecking all the display options pretty much fixed things in my case.

Interestingly, I think this was actually made to run on the XBOX360 from what I understand, but since I don't have one I'm not sure how that would work.
