Yes, but I wouldn't say ALL atheists...

But there IS a sector that follows its leaders (Dawkins, Dennet, Hitchins), has blind and uncritical faith in the scientific method, and generally has a liberal-leftist political sway...

Parakeet. Same words with empty meanings. Atheism is a religion because just like every other religion out there it is trying to "save the world" from some form of what it perceives as "evil". Atheists have declared faith in god to be evil and are committed to the fight. Atheism is not lack of faith in god but a faith itself. It is faith that belief in god is evil. Atheism is hypocritical. It is just another religion that pretends not to be a religion.

I agree that calling atheism (small "a") a religion is a semantic stretch into the realm of ludicrous...

However, would you agree that an Atheism (big "A") has emerged in recent decades that seems to be an ideological complex that seems to include a reverence of science as the epistemology par excellence, a liberal political sway, and generally has a metaphysic that adheres to reductive, atomistic and mechanistic world view.

Churches should not be tax exempt since they are selling their political rights for tax exempt status to enrich themselves, but your crowd won't do anything about it because you like knowing the churches have foolishly disinfranchised themselves from the political arena in doing so. But yes, by all means, come on in and get your tax exempt status as a religion which you are then you can cease your political activism.
