Glasgow Uni lecturers & students are taking action over threatened job cuts. Lecturers have voted to have a ballot on industrial action if the threat is not withdrawn. University students showed solidarity yesterday by demonstrating and handing in a petition. After marching to the old building they tried to hand in the petition but were not allowed in en masse so they sat down in the cloisters while a representative went in with the petition. The principal agreed to hold a meeting with the students on the 2nd June. The principal also said to the student that he agreed that some alternative cost-cutting proposals from the staff would be better than job losses. Some students were sceptical as many bosses sound as if they are going to agree then renege on the deal, but others were hopeful and applauded the announcement. They had a fairly long wait and unfortunately could not keep voices raised in the cloister for any length of time due to an exam in the location so they went outside, round the front but after a few minutes of rain getting heavier, they decided that silence was better than being rained upon, so they returned to the cloister and waited for the student representative to come out with news on whether the principal was willing to listen to their concerns over the proposed involuntary redundancies and the damage it would cause to both students and lecturers.

  • @marshalllucky what a dumb generalisation.

Why don't you do something productive for society and fight against injustices instead of making stupid comments that make you look idiot.

  • why dont these so called students get proper jobs instead of spending all day drinking and not going to lectures ;-)

  • protests wont work, (Violent or non violent tea party's) The student union should instruct every student NOT to pay up, what they going to do, sack you all, YOU HAVE THE POWER but its not in protest, that time is over, the PEOPLE should stand against the government and ALL STRIKE, no, not a few I mean ALL and put the country into a total stand still, the minors failed because there was no support, the students will fail just the same in these times.

  • You are appreciated for taking a stand!!! THANK YOU!

  • Excellent protest--thanks for standing tall. Never give up!
