Thats not true. This technology is in the hardware--with the proper hardware timer setting it can disable itself even if the thief never gets the notebook on the network
Notebook thieves work with local people around you. I found some notebook thief worked with a local janitor who pointed where the office was empty and opened. When my office mate went out some thief came into the office, he was shocked by my present and said he was lost in the building. My office door never looks like an exit or any emergency door. When he came out, he said what was happening in the office to local janitor who was saying "Then try next time."
