Learn more about Schistosoma haematobium at http://uti.stanford.edu
At least 112 million people are infected by the parasitic worm known as Schistosoma haematobium. Humans become infected after cercaria, the infective larval stage, swim out of infected aquatic snails and penetrate the skin. The cercaria mature into adult worms, which live in the veins surrounding the bladder, and lay thousands of eggs that lodge in the bladder wall and the genital tract. The inflammatory response to the eggs can lead to bloody urine, painful urination, infertility, and even bladder cancer.
