"Having just moved to California from my native Illinois, I was missing the home fires, family and friends." (Dan Fogelberg).
Illinois written by Singer/Songwriters Dan Fogelberg
From "Souvenirs" Album (1974) also included in "Portrait - The Music of Dan Fogelberg" 4-CD Box Set (1997) Special thanks to Bobby for liner notes!
(Lyrics)
Dusty day dawning three hours late
Open the curtains and let the rest wait
My mind goes running three thousand miles east
I may miss the harvest but I won't miss the feast

(Chorus)
And it looks like you're gonna have to see me again
And it looks like you're gonna have to see me again
And it looks like you're gonna have to see me again
Illinois...oh, Illinois
Illinois, Illinois

South California, your sun is too cold
It looks like your hills have been raped of their gold
I should have come out when I was first told
This lamb has got to return to the fold

(Chorus)
Illinois--I'm your boy

Flat on the prairies, soil and stone
Stretching forever taking me home
'Cause I've got a woman who waits for me there
And I need a breath of that sweet country air

(Chorus)
Illinois, Illinois
Illinois--I'm your boy

California 1971

  • I was a college DJ when this first came out and was the only jock in town playing it. The whole album is great.

  • I served in the USMC for about 22 years and everywhere I was stationed, I listened to this album/song. It always made me so happy and I could always go home to Illinois in my head when I listened to Dan. Thanks for the post.

  • Illinois Marine living in Japan. Always play this one when I have to fly back to my duty station from home on leave. Born and raised right across the river from Peoria. Lots of the pictures are VERY familiar. Gotta thank Dad for turning me onto Dan, else I'd never have a good song to cure me of homesickness.

  • Another great gift to us Dan fans JM. "I may miss the harvest but I won't miss the feast"...

    Thank you!

  • Yeah except when it goes to Missouri, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio or uh ...I guess Iowa... Anyway. Great pictures of P town. I live here and despite all my faux scorn, this video gets me kind of wistful.

  • When the midwest flushes, it all goes to Illinois.

  • This song will always have a special place in my heart. God Bless you Dan. We miss you.

  • Took the wife (at that time) and her gal friend to his concert at ISU, back in the late 1970's. Her girl friend said she had an Orgasm in her front row seat....

  • Happy 60th birthday to our leader of the band this upcoming weekend in Peoria! Huge celebration is going on in Peoria to celebrate the life of a most remarkable man!

  • i miss him!!!!!

  • Illinois is just a step in one's life. You must get over it.

  • @doofus0123: That's awesome. I hope you enjoy your time there.
