Xander is ultimately my favourite character in the series (by the end, and in retrospect). He's the would-be-every-person with a dissatisfactory home life who still manages to turn into a very good and empathic man.

Yeah. I agree. His father abused his mother and he didn't like him for that and as you can tell from "Hell's Bells" his mother was very submissive to his father, a trait he disliked with his mother as well. So ultimately he was a sad character deep down as we found out in Season Six, especially when he tragically left his one true love Anya at their wedding because of his own experience with his family. He is not one-dimensional as many pseudo-Buffy fans say. In fact, he is the most complicated.
