Yeah, I tried this too. The game sort of chases its tail for a bit: your heart total is reduced to zero, but instead of leaving your life total untouched, your old heart total becomes your new life total.
So, as long as you've got at least 1 heart, you can survive a hit: life becomes 1, hearts drop to 0.

not only that, you also need full HP, because the HP + Hearts need to be greater than max HP.
