so is Duke Ellington on Battleship Kate of 20 Sept. '24 (Gnt 5584), and if so is that his first recording?

I am so thankful for all the effort you've made to promote this old music.
My mom was born in 1926 and I've added this to that year's playlist.
Averaging 2 hours each, my playlists for 300 artists & each of the past 120 years are meant to be your most accessable & intrnational music library ever !

Wonderful!! Duke Ellington certainly had an association with him.
Thank you for sharing this great post.

Don't know if he was a multi instrumentalist, but he is reputed to have been able to play Three clarinets at once!!

I like the banjo. I think it is an old classic banjo, such as the ragtime virtuosos were playing on. Is he unknown? Thanks for sharing. Hein

Glad you liked this recording. Sweatman deserves more recognition as one of the pioneers of recorded jazz and his 1920's recordings have great variety as he recorded with his own band and small trios like this one. These small combo recordings of his predated the benny Goodman trio of a decade later.

I've always thought of him as a forebear of Fess Williams, whose records i've always enjoyed, because -- and not in spite -- of Fess's "gaspipe" clarinet solos. The only other thing I know about Wilbur Sweatman was that he was a multi-instrumentalist. Cool record. I don't think I'd ever heard Wilbur on disk.

I am glad I was able to provide these recordings if you had never heard Wilbur Sweatman. I like Fess Williams too. I think his Hot Town is a great jazz recording.
