MS has lost its edge in the server market to Linux (see 2006 IBM-sponsored study), hence the Novell-MS deal. This leaves MS with the large desktop market. However applications on non-commercial general purpose computers are rapidly being replaced by special-purpose devices [Xbox (games), Nokia N800 (Inet), SU-1B Digital Pen + Sony Reader (word processing, kinda), etc.]. My guess is Gates knows this and wants to dominate each sector ASAP. Wide spread MS software on embedded systems ... fun.
